Dear Parents,

Welcome to The Jewish School of the Arts!

Enclosed please find important information regarding the registration form, school calendar, and some general plans for the upcoming school year. Please read this information carefully and if there is anything you would like to discuss at any stage, feel free to call me at 818-856-5794. Please make sure to have the registration form and payment complete before the first day of school.

We hope that by the year’s end, along with Hebrew reading, Holiday learning, and other Jewish topics, your child will develop a deep love and respect for his/her beautiful heritage, as well as a strong sense of Jewish pride and identity. We encourage you, as a parent, to get involved, ask questions and keep in touch with the happenings at school.

At Hebrew School of the Arts, we believe that your child's first taste of Jewish learning should be fun, meaningful, and with a hands-on experience; namely through art and music.  Families of all backgrounds and affiliations are made to feel welcome. Please invite your friends to visit our classroom to learn more

about our school and our unique art program and curriculum.

We will be sending a newsletter at the end of every workshop to keep you - the parent - more involved and informed of the lessons and activities in our school. We hope to bring a taste of Hebrew School home with you.

Looking forward to an enjoyable and successful school year together.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Michal Carlebach

Director, Jewish School of the Arts

-CURRICULUM-

Jewish Holiday workshops are a series of four workshops before a major Jewish Holiday. This class uses various artistic mediums to learn about each holiday—whether art, craft, song or activity.  Before each activity, your child will learn the meaning behind the holiday, its background, and practical application to today's day.

Jewish values are infused throughout each lesson.  We stress the importance of deriving valuabe life lessons from each holiday and Jewish culture.  It's not enough to just learn about it - children are encouraged to and will be recognized for applying these values on a day to day basis in their own lives.

Hebrew Reading - there is no greater gift a parent can give a child than the gift of language; learning to express themselves in a new way - especially using the Hebrew language.  This begins with the first steps of reading Hebrew fluently. Why not do this in a fun hands on way using songs, games, and proven techniques that will enable your child to read quickly!  Parents - get ready to watch your children learn to read Hebrew at our new Hebrew School of the Arts.  Read about our new innovative Hebrew Reading program – “CapIt!” on our website.

Tzedakah

Tzedakah (charity) is a concept which is basic to Judaism. Our school attempts to develop a commitment among our students to share with others less fortunate than themselves by donating a few pennies a day to charity. Parents are asked to provide children with a coin(s) for Tzedakah for each class.

Homework

Although we will not be assigning homework per se, review at home of the Hebrew reading skills is very important to the student’s progress. They will receive incentives to encourage review at home.

Mitzvah Note

Your child will be encouraged to bring a note from his or her parent of a mitzvah, good deed, that they have done that week. This can be any positive action that you want to encourage and recognize in your child.  All the Mitzvah notes will be shared with the class during the learning session, and will then be added to our beautiful growing “Mitzvah tree”.
